The focus of orthodontics is on straightening teeth and correcting any issues with how your teeth close together—your bite. While orthodontics is often thought of as making your smile “look good,” the function of your teeth and jaw is paramount to your long-term health.
Orthodontic options have come a long way over the years. Beyond traditional brackets and wires, we now have solutions like Invisalign clear aligners, clear brackets, and even brackets that fit on the back side of your teeth, eliminating the obvious signs that you are in the process of orthodontic treatment.
When to Seek Treatment
Many parents begin asking for recommendations on orthodontics when their children are in elementary school. In fact, the American Association of Orthodontists (AAO) recommends children be evaluated around age seven. This allows for the placement of any needed spacers, which will work with your child as he or she continues to grow. Actual braces are generally not placed until closer to age 12, when the baby teeth have been fully replaced by the permanent ones.
Not Just for Kids
Orthodontics is also no longer thought of as “just for kids.” As the options have improved, more adults are taking steps to correct issues that were either not addressed when they were young, or that developed over time after traditional ortho treatment was completed.
Orthodontic Options at Brito Family Dental
As a general dentistry practice, our office does not offer traditional bracket and wire orthodontics. However, because we know your history and we can see the aspects of your teeth positioning that may be causing trouble, we can help you make decisions on what options might be best for you. We work with the area’s top orthodontists to ensure that if you or your child is a candidate for traditional ortho treatment, you will be in good hands.
Dr. Brito does offer Invisalign® clear aligners for patients with minor overcrowding or spacing problems. Invisalign® offers a more discreet option for busy adults who are not looking for brackets and wires. We offer complimentary consultations to help determine whether Invisalign will work for you.
